Sierra Madre

Enhancing its surface with a poem composed by the artist, Sierra Madre revolves around the concepts of silence, dreaming and pureness, touching on the naturalistic aspect embodied in its form. The sculptural approach of this piece, and its lyrical phrases engraved directly onto its surface, explore an emotive tension in form that is enhanced by the continuous interplay between the poetic words and the geometric segmentation of the mountain range.

Biography

Bill Woodrow

Bill Woodrow (b. 1948 Henley-on-Thames, UK) studied at Winchester School of Art and then in London at St. Martin’s School of Art followed by Chelsea College of Art and Design.

As a prominent figure in the New British Sculpture movement, Bill Woodrow came to international prominence in the early 1980s with his cut-out sculptures. Primarily rooted in sculpture, his artistic practice is open and influenced by the use of wide variety of objects and material found on the streets, remnants of our throwaway consumer society. These materials were mainly small domestic appliances and the finished works had the appearance of archeologically excavated objects, poetic, surrealist sculptures. By re-contextualizing these materials, Woodrow’s art has over time acquired an important narrative element. In the late 1980s, he changed the way he worked and began using other materials such as welded steel, bronze, glass and ceramics.

His work is in public collections worldwide including Tate Modern, London; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottowa; Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Netherlands; MUDAM, Luxembourg; and City Art Gallery, Auckland. Woodrow represented Britain at the Biennals of Sydney (1982); Paris (1982 and 1985); and São Paulo (1983 and 1991). He was the finalist for the Turner Prize in 1986 and won the Annie Gerber Award, Seattle Museum of Art in 1988. Woodrow was elected a Royal Academician, in the sculpture category in May 2002.
